The Norfolk State University community is heartbroken over the passing of Natshawn Charity, a gifted musician, dedicated educator, and cherished member of the Spartan “Legion” family. His untimely departure leaves behind a profound silence in the hearts of all who knew him — one that will forever be filled by the echoes of his extraordinary music, mentorship, and spirit.
From the moment Natshawn joined Norfolk State University as a student in 2017, his passion for music and unwavering dedication to his craft set him apart. He grew from a talented and committed student to an esteemed Arranger, High Brass Coordinator, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Music. Through his leadership, he helped shape and uplift the Spartan “Legion” Marching Band, leaving an indelible mark on both the sound and soul of the program.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Natshawn was deeply involved in the musical and fraternal life of his community. He was a proud member of the Iota Xi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Rho Mu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, organizations that embody the brotherhood, musicianship, and service he lived by each day. He also shared his immense talent as a bassist for Renewal Church and with the renowned band RaJazz, where his artistry and energy touched countless lives.
Those who knew Natshawn remember not only his immense musical gifts but also his kindness, humility, and passion for uplifting others. He had a rare gift for connecting with people through both his music and his heart — inspiring his students, colleagues, and friends to strive for excellence while remaining true to themselves.
As the Spartan community grieves this tremendous loss, they also celebrate the legacy Natshawn leaves behind — one of dedication, creativity, and love for his art and his people. His melodies will continue to live on in every performance, every rehearsal, and every heart that beats to the rhythm of the Spartan “Legion.”
Rest in harmony, Natshawn Charity.
Your sound, your soul, and your legacy will forever resonate in the halls of Norfolk State University and in the hearts of all who were blessed to know you. 💚💛🎺
