The Huntingdon College community is heartbroken as we mourn the tragic loss of James Owens, a beloved junior and standout defensive lineman from Tuscaloosa, who passed away in a car accident while returning to campus. James’s sudden death has left an indescribable void in the hearts of his teammates, friends, and the entire college family.
James was more than an athlete; he was a towering presence of kindness, faith, and leadership. Throughout his time at Huntingdon, he grew in his faith and shared it openly with those around him. Just weeks ago, he requested to be baptized by the College Chaplain, surrounded by his teammates and brothers on the field where he had left an indelible mark as a decorated defensive lineman for the Hawks. His faith, humility, and example inspired those around him to live with integrity and purpose.
Athletics at Huntingdon are about more than the games; they are about the bonds, the brotherhood, and the life lessons that shape young men and women. James embodied all of this and more. He lived with passion, led by example, and always pointed others toward kindness and faith. His teammates remember him not only for his strength on the field but for the heart and spirit he brought to every practice, every game, and every moment with friends.
The College celebrates James’s life — the love he shared, the brotherhood he formed, and the lasting impact he had on everyone who knew him. He was a source of encouragement, joy, and faith, and his presence enriched the lives of his peers and coaches alike.
